Says CAF women champions league is better than ...

Despite the cancellation of the Africa Women Cup of Nation, AWCON 2020, former Super Falcons’ midfielder, Stella Mbachu has urged the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF to go ahead and hire a coach for the Nigerian women senior national team.

Mbachu, one of Africa’s most revered midfielders, says there is need for 10 times African champions, the Super Falcons to continue to develop before their next major championship.

The South Africa 2010 most valuable player, MVP, also wants NFF to consider local coaches for the Super Falcons’ head coach position.

“Must we wait for the AWCON before we have a coach? We need to have a coach, whether foreign or local. Organize camps for the players for one or two weeks then they go back to their clubs."

"And this idea of going for a foreign coach, what is a foreign coach coming here to do? Meanwhile, we have our retired players, the likes of Florence Omagbemi and co." We have local coaches here and you want to go and look for foreign, what is a foreign coach coming to do?"

"I see no reason for a foreign coach, they should give the job to local coaches and start improving the team little by little. They should call for camps, one week, two weeks, they go back, and we will all see the improvement in the team." Mbachu said.

Earlier this week, CAF announced the cancelation of AWCON 2020 citing the “challenging conditions” occasioned by Covid-19 and also announced that it has concluded plans to start a CAF women champions league by 2021.

Mbachu who is currently the coach of Nigeria Women Football League(NWFL) team, Heartland Queens, says CAF’s women champions league will improve football on the continent even more than AWCON.

“The cancellation of AWCON is for our safety, we must be alive to play football, even the European Women championship was also canceled and I don’t think it will have a negative impact on the women’s game as long as we have the leagues going on."

"CAF’s idea of a Women’s champions league is also a welcomed development, Europe started over four years ago. Forget about AWCON, with the CAF women’s champions league, African women football will grow."

"Every state government with teams in the champions league will not want to disgrace themselves, they will finance, then we will see some individual companies that will come up to sponsor teams." "Because it will be a disgrace for a state government for their team to qualify for a continental event and they can’t attend. This will bring lots of development around the women’s game, with more fans coming to watch games, more investment opportunities, and people will take the local leagues more seriously."  She concluded.
