"If Amunike was not Playing, Ikpeba was there," : Babayaro says Covid Restrictions Blessing in Disguise.

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Emmanuel Babayaro, says Nigeria should never worry about the availability of any of the Super Eagles players, ahead of world cup qualifier against Cape Verde. The Atlanta 1996 gold-winning goalkeeper, believes it is an opportunity for other players to prove themselves.



English Premier League clubs had announced they will not release players for international matches played in so-called covid-19 “red-list” countries, because players travelling to red-list countries would have to follow UK COVID regulations upon their return, ruling them out of some club matches.




Babayaro, while speaking on 95.1 Nigeria Info FM, Abuja, says this could be a blessing in disguise for Nigeria: 


"I believe in every situation it creates another and even better opportunity. 

If someone will not play, somebody else we play."


"With all due respect, by now the Nigerian national team,  we should have two to three standby teams that people can walk in and walk out at any time." 


"So if A does not come, B can be there, if B does not come, C can be there. We used to have that in this nation."


"Once Upon a Time in this nation, if Amunike is not playing, Ikpeba is playing, there was always two-to-three people in every position. If Rufai is not there in goal, Alloy Is there, if Alloy is not there Wilfred is there, If Wilfred is not there, Ike it is there, four options."


"We have to create that opportunity, so this gives us the rare chance to do that." 



Super Eagles Coach Gernot Rohr has invited six England based players for this month's world cup qualifier against Liberia and Cape Verde. These players could miss the game away to Cape Verde because the island is on the UK COVID red-list.

Nigeria will play Liberia on September 3rd, 2021 in Lagos and then travel to Cape Verde four days later to play on the Island.

AFCON 2019: Amunike leads, will Rohr follow?

Former African of footballer of the year, Emmanuel Amunike, who is now the head coach of the Taifa Stars of Tanzania, recently named Under-17 striker, Kelvin John in his provisional squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. Kelvin caught the eyes of major clubs around the world with his all-round performance for the Serengeti Boys at the just concluded CAF Under-17 Cup of Nations and he is said to be on his way to Old Trafford. Super Eagles of Nigeria's head coach, Gernot Rohr also made similar promise when he visited the Nigeria Under-17 team before the CAF Under-17 Cup of Nations in April.   It is also on record that Rohr made and fulfilled similar commitment to the Nigeria Under-20 team, the Flying Eagles when he eventually invited Valentine Ozornwafor for the Super Eagles' games against Egypt and Seychelles in March.
